Genji Monogatari

World's First Novell

The Tale of Genji is considered to be the world's first full-length novel. It was written by a noblewoman named Murasaki Shikibu in the early eleventh century during the Heian Period.

It centers on the life and loves of a handsome son, Hikaru Genji and his descendents. The elegance of the Heian Period gives place to this narration that in perfect harmony joins numerous generations and traps the reader with its intense words.

The Burden Of Seen The  World's Despair

1993. Kevin Carter explores an aid centre in southern Sudan and walks into a wasted busland beyond; a building filled with tiny, famine-stricken children who lay dying on the dirt floor. He had only walked a few metres when he was distracted by a baby's whimper. There, at the side of the dusty road was a small girl trying to drag herself to the clinic. He takes a picture, changes the angle of his lens and notices a dark, ominous shape at the edge of the frame: a vulture eyeing the girl's progress. An image worth more than a thousand words.

The picture made the front page of The New York Times and quickly became the symbol of Sudan's plight, fuelling public outrage over the famine ravaging the country. Donations poured in to African charities -and everyone wanted to talk to the South African snapper about the little girl captured in such a powerful image.

Carter responds he'd chased the vulture away and then sat under a tree and wept. Of the story after that picture was taken, that's the only part he claims to know.

1994. A Pulitzer for Feature Photography to his most hated picture; and finally, four months later, death, at the age of 33.

Steve Irwin (1962-2006)

Steve Irwin was born on 22 February 1962. In 1990, Irwin received his break into television when he was reunited with his friend, television producer John Stainton. Stainton was filming a television commercial in the Australian reptile park and had extended an offer to shoot a documentary of Irwin and his animals. In 1992, Irwin's first documentary,"The Crocodile Hunter," aired on the Discovery Channel. The success of this documentary led to the production of one of the most popular nature series on cable television.

A nature lover at heart, Irwin did not forget those who have helped him claim fame -- he donated a generous portion of his movie earnings to various crocodile and animal rescue leagues. He owned and directed the Australia Zoo in Queenslad, the  Steve Irwin Conservation Foundation and the International Crocodile Rescue organization. He was also the face of tourism and many campaigns.

On September 4th, Irwin was fatally pierced in the chest by a stingray spine whilst filming his own documentary The Ocean's Deadliest at the Great Barrier Reef ; in front of the camera, his staff, coleague and best friend who observed astonished the brief and mortal attack.

He died doing what he loved best; after all, danger was the essence of Steve Irwin, it's what made him the Crocodile hunter. Australia loses one of its greatest icons; the world, an extraordinary human being.

Destination: Australia

After going from one office to the other and receiving thousands of brochures, and searching for options and summer courses; I finally found a solution. You see, I'm studying something called Foundation Studies . This is a course for all internationals that don't have the adequate level to enter to uni. In Peru, the requirements are a minimum of 2 passed semestres at uni. Because I didn't meet the requirements, I had to do Foundation Studies -Standard Course. An Standard course is like doing year 11 and 12. It takes two semestres: from febraury to june -(one week vacations)- and from june to october. And there you are, on october, graduated from Foundation and with long, really hot vacation months waiting, til febraury, when uni starts. For that long gap between uni and Foundation I had three options: the first one: going back home; second one: go back to Japan with princess Fiona and Shrek; third one: stay and do a course, any course, that is long enough to fill in the blank months. At first I thought in studying english for two semestres; just an excuse to extend my visa. Then, I start looking up Japan's visa requirements and also, ticket expenses with a 3 month interval to Japan and to Peru. After all delays and deadlines for the final decision, I finally found an option that not only met the requirements for the extension of my visa, but also allowed me to take a faster -and cheaper- way to the second year of uni: Diploma . The Diploma Program takes two semestres (less than normal because I already studied some of the subjects on Foundation) and, after that, starts a whole new semestre, in a new place: at UNI . So, after all, I finally have a destination and a purpose. Now the only thing left is burocratic procedures... wish me luck.

Finding my way

As you may have noticed I deleted my other MsnSpace. Despite the reasons, I think it's a way to start over.
This last few days I've been really busy finding a house, moving out; classes exams, visa extension, summer courses and 3 possible places I could be for the end of the year. I haven't been able to answer many of the emails you have sent me and the few I did were the ones that had URGENT as the subject. I will eventually answer all your mails, so don't think it was laziness; it was lack of time. Also, I will soon update my MsnSpace with pictures, links and more of my life here.

Cheers
